A Vision For Fish Abundance

About FCFFT, Baga

The Federal College of Freshwater Fisheries Technology (FCFFT) Baga is located in Baga, Kukawa Local Government, about 210km north east of Maiduguri Borno state. It lies in the Sahel region of Nigeria which is characterized by very low yearly rainfall of less than 400mm and extreme weather conditions. Lake Chad which is one of the largest natural inland lakes in the world is located in this region. The Lake is highly productive but was characterized by irrational exploitation, lack of adequate knowledge of harvesting of stock, preservation; processing and storage further necessitating the establishment of the College along its shores in 1977.

The Federal College of Freshwater Fisheries Technology, Baga was established by the Federal Government of Nigeria under Lake Chad Research Institute in 1977 as a monotechnic institution to provide middle level manpower in Fisheries. The College was established by the proxy of the Research Institute order of 1975 (Supplement to official gazette No. 61, Vol. 62 of 11th December 1975 part B) which established Lake Chad Research Institute (its former parent institute). However, the College is now under the supervision of the National Institute for Freshwater Fisheries Research, New Bussa, as a result of major re-organization of the research institutes nationwide which took place between 1988 and 1989. The existence of the College is now subsumed under the decree that established the National Institute for Freshwater Fisheries Research (NIFFR), New Bussa, Niger State. The College admitted its first set of students in 1979 to undergo the Vocational Competency in Fisheries with an immediate view of upgrading it to an OND awarding Institution and eventually HND. The training of students on both Certificate and OND courses progressed till 1989 when National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) halted further admission into OND programme until appreciable upgrade of facilities and personnel. However, this has been regularized with the approval granted the College to mount both Pre-ND and ND programmes in 2008 and 2010 respectively; and in 2013 National Board for Technical Education approved the takeoff of the Higher National Diploma (HND) programme in Fisheries Technology. The College has also completed plans to mount courses in Agricultural Extension, Agricultural Technology, Home and Rural Economics, Hotel and Catering Management, Science Laboratory Technology and Computer Science all at National Diploma (ND) level to upgrade its status to a polytechnic. Before the approval for the Pre ND and ND programmes, the College was training students at vocational and certificate levels.
